August Athlete of the Month: Andrew Jensen

Athlete of the Month: Andrew Jensen

Birthday:
 September 16, 1985

CrossFit Birthday: March 2013…it would have been mine and Leann’s second date!

How did you hear about CrossFit?  I went on a date with this rockin’ Cross-fitter and that’s all she talked about! Two days later I showed up in the gym, and haven’t left since.

How has CrossFit changed your life? All kinds of changes! I’ve now been happily married almost 5 years to that rockin’ Cross fitter who first introduced me to 515. I think of fitness differently, it’s more of a lifestyle now….not something I ‘have’ to do. The benefits of CrossFit cross into almost all other aspects of life – from diet to exercise to how I approach the daily challenges life and work can throw our way.

Favorite & least favorite movements:  My favorite movements are gymnastics – muscle ups, pull-ups, toes-to-bar. My least favorite is the assault bike – such an evil piece of equipment!

Family info: Happily married to Leann, and dog-parent to our Golden Retriever, Bosco. I have a big close family, my parents live in West Des Moines but snow-bird in Florida. My sister, her husband, and their two little rascals live in eastern Iowa, and my younger brother lives in Vegas.

Something interesting about you – My dad worked for Hy-Vee for 43 years, so I grew up a so-called “Hy-Vee brat” – we moved from town to town as he was working his way up the food chain, literally! I went to 5 different schools in just a handful of years. That might explain my lack of shyness 🙂

Favorite saying:  “I can accept failure, everyone fails at something. But I can’t accept not trying” – Michael Jordan. Also, “Unbroken”, “Almost done” and “Don’t Stop”. Just a couple of my favorites.

Favorite songs to workout to:  Depends on what we’re working on. I like the upbeat fast music, from rock or pop to rap and country.

Favorite TV show or movie – I love comedies – Parks and Rec, New Girl, and all kinds of stand-up comedians on Netflix.

What movement or skill were you most excited about when you were able to do it?  I remember being really proud when I FINALLY overhead squatted more than Leann 6 years ago. Those fun challenges, like handstand basketball shots and wall-ball muscle up ‘tricks’ are super fun too.
