Athlete of the Month: Leann Dawson
Crossfit Birthday: 6/14/2011
How did you hear about crossfit? I kept seeing Ben and Will with these blue, rubber “Crossfit 515” bracelets. We got to talking about it, they invited me, taught me the basics, including paleo and here I am almost a year later healthier and in the best shape I’ve ever been.
Favorite/ least favorite movements or workouts? Because of my size, I like mainly bodyweight exercises. I really struggle with heavy weight, but have pushing myself to go heavier in wod’s, even if it means I do the movement 1 rep at a time. My major accomplishments this past month have been my much improved doubleunders and I’m getting close to an unassisted ring dip, which means I’ll be one step closer to a muscle up:) I also managed to do Manion (203, 95 pound backsquats) and The Chief as rx’d (95 pound power cleans.)
How has crossfit changed your life? I’ve always been active, but my diet was horrendous! I drank at least a soda a day and lived on processed foods. I ate NO vegetables or fruit period. I quickly realized if I was serious about crossfit, I was going to have to get serious about my diet. I started with a strict 30 days of paleo and was shocked at the changes I saw. I performed better, felt better and looked better. So much so that it became a lifestyle change that I continue still.
I love crossfit because it’s a competition with myself. I often start a wod wondering if I’m even going to be able to finish it and when I do, that feeling of accompishment is like nothing else! And oddly enough, once it’s over I want to do it again because I know I can do better.
Job info: I’ve been a floor manager at Von Maur for 10 years. I am also a certified group fitness instructor. I teach Les Mills Bodypump at Aspen Athletic Clubs and Level 1-3 pole fitness at Kees Camp part time.
Family info: I have the smartest, cutest, most lovable golden retriever named Bosco.
Something funny/ interesting about me: I have seen Bon Jovi in concert 7 times. In high school I beat out over 200 girls in a free throw shooting contest. I’m a Missouri farm girl who has no idea how to drive a tractor, but I can drive a bulldozer.
Favorite saying: I have two that I apply to crossfit. Don’t compare yourself to others, compare yourself to the person from yesterday. And on the impossibly hard wod’s I think of this one: If you can’t run, then walk. If you can’t walk, then crawl. Do what you have to do. Just keep moving forward and never ever give up!
Most/ least favorite song to wod to? I love all music. My ipod is completly schizophrenic. My workout music though is all rock. My favorites are Linkin Park, Seether, Apocalyptica, Guns N Roses and Metallica.
Favorite Movie: I don’t watch a lot of movies, so I’m gonna go with favorite TV shows. Above all, Lost. Otherwise my tivo is filled with reruns of The Big Bang Theory, Friends, It’s Always Sunny in Philladelphia, Modern Family and Tosh.0.
